Default I got an A8!!!

Well, I did it. Not the most creampuff, but it was the only A8 for sale in town! It's a '97 with way too many miles on it but they gave me a lot more than bluebook on the '00 Corvette I traded in, so I guess it balanced out.

Regardless, I've run into a few mechanical issues with it.

1) The rear sun shade will open and extend OK, but when it comes time to put it down it may stop part-way and grind. You can push down on it to retract it, but once it is fully retracted it will grind again. How do I fix this?

2) The headrests don't go up and down. I read there is a simple fix at audipages.com but I can't find the instructions. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

3) I'm not 100% sure it is broken, but I don't think the trunk switch located in the driver's door well always works. What lets it work and what doesn't? Will it ONLY work when the ignition is off?

Many Thanks!

Default Congrats!

I've never had to fix a broken sunshade, but I did pop the cover off to route my XM antenna wiring. It pops straight up with a trim stick, work from one side to the other, there are 3 or 4 plastic pop-ins per side. Just push straight up. Once the cover is out of the way, it'll be a lot easier to see what's going on.

Default trunk switch

The door trunk switch is deactivated IF the glove box is locked with a key. Otherwise, it should work if the ignition switch is in the on or off position.

Default Welcome to the club! If the problems you listed are all that's wrong, you've got a winner.....

The headrests go bad on ALL of these cars, and can be fixed if you are handy. I can't seem to find the instructions on Audipages either, but if you search this forum for headrest repair I'm sure you'll find it. The rear sunshades can be problematic, and unless it is totally messed up a good lubrication with a light oil or graphite type lubricant should help a lot. If the gears are stripped, then a replacement sunshade notor assembly is around $150 if memory serves me. Go to http://www.audipages.com/usedA8/usedA8items.html and check out all the items listed there- it is a really comprehensive listing of the common A8 problems. Good luck, and welcome!

Default Re: A guess

You got it Jim!
This car has been totally gone over and is now longer anywhere near stock. It is a fun go-cart around town.
