Default I have verified that the tranny misbehavior goes away immediately after recoding.

I allowed my tranny to get into the repeatable thump-n-hunt mode by not recoding for a while (current coding was 00001). I could repeatably get the thunk coasting downhill at around 40 MPH, and get the hunting going uphill with very slight throttle at about the same speed. I recoded to 00011, and immediately drove the route that would give me both the hunt and the thunk; nothing- no thunk, no hunting, just a good solid tranny. I'm not sure what exactly the TCU is "learning" to cause this behavior, but it is annoying! Certainly old MAFs, worn throttle bodies, worn throttle position sensors, etc. could add to the confusion of the TCU as it tries to adapt to these signals. I'm not sure what the ultimate fix is, but could we hard-wire a TCU reset switch we could press once a week or so? It would be quicker than having to recode every time with vag.com. I will monitor the tranny and see how long it takes for the thunk-n-hunt to return.

Default I drop my ride off last night to be recoded today.

I'll be coding it to 00011 also. My main concern with the current stock setting is that my RPM drop close to 1000 when cruising in the city. Should I expect this dreaded function to change. AudiPages example of needing to suppress to peddle quite a bit, then getting the full force of the engine is a reality. I'd live to be able to stay in or closer to my power range to allow her to pickup speed without dropping 2 or 3 gears.

Default In the city, you can always ...

use "4" or even "3" rather than "D". In the A8, even 3rd gear is good for comfortable driving all day at 55 mph.

I've been using 4 mostly. Didn't know if 3 would meet my needs, but if she's fine with it I'll be using 3 fro my daily driving.
Thanks!

Default You will find that the recode will significantly improve the downshift behavior.

The stock coding where you keep depressing the pedal moer and more until finally the tranny downshifts and RPMs are through the roof and you take off like a banshee scares the hell out of me. Id doesn't accelerate when you need it to, and then when you are already in trouble it gets you into more trouble. You will LOVE the recode........

Default The last digit must be a 1 or a 2. The TCU won't accept anything else.

The only codes that the pre-facelift TCUs accept (to the best of my knowledge) are 00001, 00002, 00011, and 00012. The first digit indicates a coding for the US (2) or the rest of the world (1). The second digit turns on (0) of off (1) the DSP function. The US coding was developed to help meet the US CAFE standards, and that is why it upshifts so quickly- to maximize fuel milage, not performance or drivability.
