I think my heart just stop momentarily last night
when I removed the starter out.

My thought was "damn I have to remove the transmission out to get all the broken pieces out of that pocket." Then whew, I found the broken pieces which remain right at the starter and removed them.

One thing, the upper bolt of the starter from the transmission side is a pain to take off. Every things else is straight forward. And yes I have to drop the subframe and lower the engine a little to get to it. Now I need to put the subframe back up and test out the new starter.

man, we've all been there. I had one of those when I dropped a nut INTO my LS400 engine doing a
timing belt. That's when a bought a boroscope that's more than paid for itself.
