The original Mark 1 used the 289, but it'll accept any small block from the 289 to the 351-W. The Mark II used the 427 FE big block. The Mark II is wider, runs wider tires, and has a larger engine bay to accept the FE motor.
I'd like to use a fuel injected, all aluminum 351-W with dry sump in the Mark II chassis. I need to sort out compatiblity of the motor, transaxle, and chassis; but I believe it can be done. A reliable 450 HP should be easy to achieve, the Ford GT40 Mark II won the 24 Hour of LeMans with a 485 HP big block.
This is the small block in the Mark I,
