I got this tip a few years ago and it definitely made a difference on my old honda accord. At idle, these butterlies are only open the slightest amount. The deposits you see surrounding the butterfly can affect the amount of air entering the throttle body at idle. I cleaned mine with some q-tips and alcohol. I was very surprised at how much dirt and deposits were around the edge of the butterfly (it doesnt LOOK that dirty). I got around 15 or so BLACK q-tips full of muck. Do both butterflies while you are in there.

....the idle stablization valve cannot do it's job properly.....because there is another parallel path of air flow.
I wonder if you solved the problem of a bad idle?
Where is this part???

Take the pipe between the air cleaner and the throttle body off and you will see it in the throttle body, there is also a larger valve below, which may have some oil at the bottom, I assume this has come from the crankcase breather just before it.
dont rub your finger along the edge of the valves as they are razor sharp, Doh! ( yes I did it , blood every where ...lol)

so the air is metered by the air mass sensor. so the system compensates for restrictions & blockages etc.
however turbulence in the intake could be an issue ...

If your idle seems to oscilate up and down within a fine range this is apparently normal for these cars. There is an oxygen sensor before and after the cats and they constantly talk to each other causing this oscilation. If the methods you guys are describing don't fix the problem then checking the O2 sensors to see if one them is bad might help. A bad sensor would through off the balance in the system and may cause a rough or irregular idle.
This has not happened to my car, but in talking to my mechanic, he reviewed how the system works, and a bad O2 sensor can have some affects on your idle. I am certainly not as knowledgable as the rest of you all but this may help someone with idle issues.
