Re: MUST. HAVE. CODES.
Really? A rebuild for $2,700?! Do I just look up ZF online or ???
The in/out for $1K is in line with the $1,100 book the shop quoted (they use the popular software I don't recall the name of).

Thinking it through.
I like the way Mr. Barber thinks. (All figures below in $K). Let's take my car, for example. I bought it for $7 and put about $4 into it (timing belt job, trans. fluid, control arm set, and a few other things) = $11. Let's suppose my transmission goes. Someone says, sell it. Well, I think, this car is a known quantity. If I sell my car and get $2 or $3 with a defunct tranny, I'm out say $7. If I now buy a facelift for say $11 and it needs the same work then I'm up to $15 + my loss of $7 = $22. If I spend $4 or $5 on a properly rebuilt tranny (new or rebuilt VB and TCC) I'm only up to $15 or $16. Now, if there is a flaw in my reasoning then where is it?

I'd say keep it ....
at least when you fix it correctly, that is one less problem that will come back. Also, being $6k in the hole on it, I'd just keep it and enjoy driving what you have. If you get a newer one or any other used car, it might still have problems. Post-face D2s are known to lose reverse which would also call for a new trans.
How's the interior, exterior and things like that? Looks good? Trans and tune up $4,000. After that, you'll probably be good for a while. If it last another 2 years after that then it was worth it!
..... or you can just ghost-ride it in to a wall or off a cliff. Then your gap insurance will cover the loss difference in the loan.

Don't worry Obama will bail you out.
Just walk away, the new Obama regime will take care of you and yours. It was that mean banker that loaned you all of that easy money that is to blame. LOL!
At $8K owed, if you really like the car, buy KYNZ's for $5K. His tranny is rebuilt already.

Re: And where can one purchase a ZF rebuilt tranny?
Hi Britt
This is Jacques from Biloxi, I just passed through your area last night in my A8. Today my transmission just went in limp mode.
