This posting may be late, but I think I have to correct a few mistakes :-)
Fist of all, it's not a 2.8 TDI, but a 2.5 TDI. This V6 24V engine came either with a 6-speed manual or the tiptonic (4 or 5 speed, depending on the model year). There never was a 5-speed option for the TDIs.
The 2.8 V6 (eiter 24V or 30V) was a gasoline engine. With this engine you had the choice between a 5-speed manual or the tiptronic.
I don't know if the 2.5 TDIs were available with manual transmission in the U.K. but in the rest of Europe they were.
And possibly there were a few post face-lift S8 with 6-speed manual built by quattro GmbH for special customers (I don't want to know the price tag of those beauties...)
