Default 1990-1994 V8

Those early A8s were still D2s.

The V8 is pretty much a V8-powered 200, I think.

Default its a little more complicated than that...

the type 4x is what vwag calls these cars. the a8 we know and love is the type 4d.

the early 100 was a type 42 (or was that 43), the next generation of 100/200 the type 44.

strictly speaking the a6 and a8 are derivatives of the type 4 platform, although clearly the v8 was the granddaddy of the a8. hence the d1/d2/d3 moniker. strictly though they are type 4c, 4d & 4e.

the current a6 generation is a type 4b.

this is how you can tell the parts because parts specific for a particular type have that type number as the 1st digits. hence a a8 wheel bearing has a 4d prefix to the part number (i.e. type 4d), while that of an a6 is 4b prefix.

the d3 is strictly speaking a type 4e.
