Default Inner Tie Rod End

It turns out that if you're going to replace the control arms and tie rod ends, and you plan to do the inner ends (not just the outers), it's better to do it while you have the strut out. If the strut is out, you can get a 38 mm wrench (if you have one) or a big adjustable wrench on the flats of the inner tie-rod end.

Otherwise, you can turn the steering wheel to full-lock which moves the rack out far enough that you can get your BAW on the nut. It's on pretty tight, so you'll need some extra leverage. I haven't yet tried adding a length of pipe onto my BAW -- I'm afraid that the torque will break my wrench before breaking loose the nut.

I had gone to Autozone to borrow their tie rod end removal tool. As it happens, their tool isn't quite big enough.

Pep Boys sometimes has the Lisle 5-in-1 tool, but my local branch only had the 1-in-1 part of it. After realizing that five pieces were missing, the register jockey put the tool back on the shelf and went back to register jockeying. So the next guy to go and try to borrow the tool is going to find out the same thing I did.

I may just break down and buy the Lisle tool myself.
