instrument cluster - repairable?

I've heard that the immobilizer on these cars may fail suddenly, necessitating replacement of the entire instrument cluster.
What would it take to repair that part instead of replacing the whole cluster?
Would it be unwise to buy a used cluster to have on hand in order to avoid getting reamed by the dealer when mine finally does fail? What I'm thinking is that the used one might be just about as likely to fail as the one in my own car which (hypothetically) has just failed.

Without a full schematic, it would be fairly difficult unless there was an obvious catastrophic failure, like a burned out resistor or an exploded capacitor.
