Default Interior door handle failure

Alright here's the deal. My door randomly wouldn't shut, so i looked and pulled the little mechanism down in the door itself (striker pin?). Anyways, door now shuts, however the interior door handle doesn't work (exterior does). I did notice that during the time the door wouldn't shut, the interior handle wouldn't return to it's normal resting position. My guess is the mechanism came loose and fell off which would really suck for me because:
1. I'm leaving on a road trip tomorrow
2. I haven't got any Audi speciallty tools which i assume are needed for this particular project.

I guess I need to know how quickly this can be fixed.
Any idea? Any quick fixes?
Thanks in advance

Default This has happened to me

on my A6. Basically, there is a thick wire with a loop at the end of it that unhooked itself. Unfortunately, I had to remove not only the interior trim of the door, but also the component carrier which consists of the entire window. Only then could I access (barely) the end of the wire and the mechanism it hooks onto. If you end up doing this, bring your patience and prepare for the unending fun that *is* hooking the wire.

been there too. No special tools but you do need to remove the door panel
