Default An introduction of sorts...

Hey guys and gals- I've posted here a few times, but never really took the time to introduce myself. I picked up a 97 A8Q on ebay a few months ago (very cheap!) that has some front end damage. I've been in the process of getting it back up to speed and am making great progress. The information i've been finding here has been fantastic, and being that this is the first Audi i've ever owned, i've needed to use this site a LOT to learn how to work on the car. Above is a picture of the car the day I picked it up. (pretty smashed!) Stay tuned for the "after" pictures.

Best Regards,

Mike Davis

Default If you don't have the A8 book on the body, you should get it

I have it and it talks a lot about the body and the crumple/replacement parts.

If you want, I could copy some pages for you.

Default Body Parts Source

I don't know where you will find all of the necessary parts, but give that a good salvage yard will have most of what you need, I'd suggest you talk to John at Shokan. I have purchased several body parts from them, and they know how to package them to protect them from harm. You really picked a big project, but given the A8's nature, it will be easier than a unibody car I suspect. What is your budget? How many miles are on the car, and how did you gain the experience to accomplish this huge task? I am very impressed by your courage (I think we all are!). You know we all want you to be successful and will help you as much as we can. Paul W is awesome with help, and Tozo has courage to match yours (well almost!)

Good Luck

http://www.shokan.com</a

Thank you so much for the link to Shokan. I already sent them a request with my 'wish list'. I bought this car very inexpensivly as everyone I know was telling me that it is so difficult to repair an A8 because of its aluminum construction. That has really turned out to be a total urban legend. This is one of the easiest cars to repair that I think i've ever delt with. The way the car is constructed is so smart. Bravo to the Audi engineers.

At this point, I have the suspension completely repaired, and the damgae to the engine is repaired. I had to replace the left front hub/spindle, and the left front lower forward control arm. That piece was very easy to find, as it's the same unit found on late model passats. I also had to replace the power steering pump, and the aluminum bracket that goes between it and the engine.

Next on the list is the replacment of the radiator core support and radiator. I have to replace both of the tubes that mount to the forward portion of the frame. I dont know if you guys have seen the A8 brochure, but there is a picture of one of these parts in it that is smashed to show how well they absorb impact. The ones from my car look exactly like the photo in the brochure. Very cool!

Thanks again, guys, for your show of support!

Thanks for the offer, Paul! I have the Mitchell crash book on the car, which has proved to be very useful, and I have a subscription to the online bently pages, but I'm not sure about this body book. Is it an original Audi publication? Thanks again!

Default Yes, it's a general Audi publication

For the techs and Audi personnel. I'll have to get it out.
