All,
Well got it done and wow what a difference in both sound quality and overall "decluttering" of my cockpit. The install went well overall but I am getting some interference with the powersupply that I purchased that plugs into the cig lighter (Ipod white in the pic). I will have to track this down to see what I can do to isolate this problem. It is crystal clear however when it plays on battery.
Here where I started with it is all torn out. I have simple lock nuts to hold the connections until I solider and shrink rap all connections. I wanted to make sure I had everything working first. Notice PaulW's instructions on the seat...had to make some minor adjustments/modifications but overall was right on with the install.

I purchased a simple automotive SPST switch and mounted it in the dummy switch located left of the steering wheel. I didn't use the suggested rear fog light switch simply because of cost (70 + dollars from dealer and didn't find many on ebay). This solution was $2.99 from radio shack and I think that was a rip-off. I am sure I could have got it for pennies from a actual electronics supplier.

And the finished product...I really like the way this turned out, nice and clean.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/53395/pict1545.jpg">
I also mounted a mini connector (female) in the ash tray. Since I don't smoke and don't allow anyone to smoke in my ride this worked out perfect and added to the "stealthiness" of the interface. I used Cat 5 Ethernet cable to make this connection because of the quality of the cable and because I had a bunch sitting around.

Here is in stealth mode...everything can easily be removed and locked in the trunk.

I had fun on this project because I was able to use all the spare parts off of computers, old MD players, and left over wire from many forgotten projects of old. Now if I can find the source of the interference when plugged into the car charger I will be happy.

I hardwired a power supply for my very old generation 2 iPod.....sometimes I have an alternator whine also, sometimes not.
If I'm on a long road trip with it making the noise, I just run the iPod on battery.

My homemade connector from the Ipod line out (headphone output) is picking up the interference. I will invest in a high quality shielded connector and that should clean things up.
I also have to figure out a way to trick the unit into thinking the CD player is playing because when the CD changer switches to a new CD it interrupts the Ipod playback.
Has anyone experienced the same issues? I know I seen a solution in PaulW's install but I had to make some adjustments because my connector setup was slightly different. I tried simply unplugging the CD changer connector in the trunk but then I was unable to select the CD player from the head unit. Does anyone have the pin-out for that connector handy?

to car. I had a full blown gps nav system by alpine in my saab and to tell you the truth the pda one is nicer and just as many options and even 3d views etc. Plus I can take it car to car with no issue. I also hard wired a charger for it too. and I can play mp3 and video also on it with the sound though my audi head unit (via blitzsafe). so now I have everything in one and lots cheaper and easier to install. the software I run for nav is co-pilot live ... IT has all the info for all resturants (food type), gas stations, parks, gas stations, atms. etc the list goes on. I have been using it for about 2 years and I have the latest software upgrade. Check it out.. for mp3 software I run a freeware called mort player it even has a car screen aso big buttons on the touch screen and it shuffles, plays in order etc.. everything that a ipod does and more. video I use windows media player. But there are others. cost for my pda about $600, gps software pluse bluetooth antenna 250 and cf car 8gig $150 and 2gig sd card $60.. so not a bad toy and it get wireless internet also. I have th hp 4705 pda.. I love it
