So it was brought to my attention that my car isn't Champagne after it, it's Cashmere Gray Mica. When I bought my car I thought it was "cashmere gray with pearl effect" but that was for later years I believe, and somehow I stumbled onto Champagne, read it in some brochure I came across.
April was the one who caught it (our most trusted source) and pointed it out to me. I even have a 1997 brochure of all Audi models (40 pages) with paint swatches that I bought on Ebay a while back. I could of sworn I checked it after I bought the brochure, but I'm looking at it now and it's cashmere gray mica!
Thanks for the calibration!

I wonder why they named a color after a goat and a mineral? I liked the champagne moniker better myself, being an amateur alcoholic and all... ;-)!

I've seen several Cashmeres, and they do look quite brownish. From your photos, your car does not look like cashmere at all, but of course, the photos can lie a lot.
Can you describe your color? On your signature picture it looks a lot like quartz grey, but on some others it has some brownish hue. But not at all as much as Cashmere, that one is more brown than grey. But it is a difficult color, it changes a lot with the lightning.
Take a look at this A8 color chart:
www.kjella.net/A8farger.jpg
View the Cashmere from a distance, and it looks quite accurate.

.....From the catalog "Audi for 1997. Fasten your seatbelt before you turn the key. Or the page.". This is a 40 page catalog with all U.S. models for 1997. It has actual color swatches (not printed, actual paint samples) in the back.
Exterior colors available for the 3.7 and 4.2 A8 (available interiors after color):
Aluminum Silver metallic (1, 2, 3)
Emerald Green Mica metallic (1, 2, 4)
Amethyst Gray Mica metallic (1, 2, 4)
Ming Blue metallic (2, 3, 4)
Cashmere Gray Mica metallic (1, 2, 4)
Pearl White pearlescent (only color that was an option) (1, 2, 3, 4)
Rubin Red Mica metallic (1, 2, 4)
Brillant Black with clearcoat (1, 2, 4)
Interior colors available are (all Fine Napa Leather):
1. Anthracite (black), 2. Platinum (medium brown), 3. Slate Blue (dark grey/blue), 4. Ecru (tannish white)
After looking at the paint swatches, the only two colors my car could be is the Cashmere Gray Mica or Amethyst Gray Mica.
My car is defintely brown, not always easy to see in the pictures. Sometimes you see a A6 in the same color brown, but not very often. When I saw pictures of it on Ebay, where I bought it, I couldn't figure out if it was brown, grey or a little purple.
I'll have to bring the brochure to the car and compare paint.
Check out this night picture, I think it shows the car as brown. The saga continues! Actually after I previewed the message, I see what you mean about the differences in color between my sig and the posted picture. The car is much closer to the posted picture at night. But it is metallic, so the color does change in the different lights.

on the A6.
Cashmere is a greyish driftwood brown. In certain light it can look tobacco brown, grey, and dusty lavender.
