If you are referring to the pipe, you only need 1. You are going to have to take off the alternator to do it, might want to consider dropping in a new set of brushes. It's super easy and cheap.

I'm not sure this would apply to me because i have a D3 with the water cooled alternator. I might put a voltage regulator on as the cabin lights do flicker a little bit on first startup but has no issues charging battery and does not flicker anymore when warm. Battery is just over a year old.

It seems as though i could put that off as the alternator can be removed without pulling the front end off (i think).

Would i be good with this set of gaskets and this extra gasket for the coolant pipe job?

I don't want to bear that responsibility for correct gasket ordering. Lol! The 077-198-405 says it doesn't fit my 2001 D2, but maybe yours. I think I ordered that kit but the figure 8 gasket was wrong for mine so I gooped it up with some rtv and slapped it back in. I had the aluminum bufkin pipe that had 4 orings on it already. If you are ordering an OEM Audi plastic pipe I think the 077-121-437 rings are correct.
As far as the alternator, I think the regulator/brushes come together as one bolt on part. Mine did and seems to be working fine.

Understandable lol! Strange the figure 8 did not fit yours as it is listed on a few audi sites fitting my and your car. Some sites say it does not fit the D3 at all. I may have to try and find a D3 forum with someone who did the replacement.

As for the pipe since Bufkin no longer sells any i bought this one ebay. Seems to have good reviews:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/253756606807

Unsure if i will just use the 4 orings already on it or put the Audi ones if they even fit. Did the stock OE plastic one only have 2?

I think I've used that eBay pipe once with good results and have another sitting in the toolbox for the next timing belt job.

If it is the same one, the quality is excellent.

Any long term update on the Spectra cam tensioner install? I am considering using those in my D3 (price is good) but am looking for feedback about the quality before pulling the trigger.

James Bufkin is selling the his oil cooler pipe at the moment.

Ebay search:

Aluminum Oil Cooler "Bufkin Pipe"

People from the rest of the world, not USA and possibly Canada, will be confused by the peculiar spelling of aluminium
I supported him as the originator of the lovely replacement piece. I think he should be preferred.
