Like clockwork: 56k miles on 2000 A8 and it appears I have a t-stat failure

Temp gauge runs up near H, A/C turns off. Two days in a row now.
Only 13 days into this car, this pisses me off.

my wife drove a bit too far with it, then told me about it. New radiator was needed by then and so too might as well do t belt etc.
I think it also leads / provokes/ causes oil cooler leak... which I still need to get done.
I wonder if there is any chance to do a tsat by itself on the a8? Supposedly was impossible on the cabrio, but IS possible with some patience, slight belt twisting and tight space work.

I went out tonight and drove around a bit to try and diagnose. A/C off and it still heated up. Then, I couldn't take it so I put the A/C back on, and thinking maybe it's radiator circluation I could push through, I put the tiptronic down to second gear and starting gunning it from 25-60mph up and down keeping it mostly in second. Surprisingly, the temp dropped to normal (little to the right of 12 o'clock, middle of the range).
So even though the reservoir was full I'm going to see what I can do in the AM - picked up some fluid. I'll top it off and try the bleed procedure someone explained here.

And normal is the thick mark left of 12 o'clock. Sorry.
If you have a kitchen thermometer with a thin probe, gently stick it high in the radiator on the passenger side with the engine idling and the gauge above the thick mark. It should show something close to the gauge, near or above 200 F. Then put it in the bottom corner of the radiator, passenger side. If it shows something cool like 100 F even though the gauge is above normal, the coolant isn't flowing, and if it used to be okay, the thermostat is the most likely culprit.
Zelenda sells the proper timing belt tools. You can save time by following the service manual procedure for merely removing the belt from the top sprockets, not going all the way to changing and retensioning it. Not sure I'd trust the belt after torturing it by trying to slip the thermostat housing out behind it -- it's very tight.

I just got back from a local mechanic who did a troubleshoot on the radiator and said that's fine, they think it's the thermostat too.
Quoted $590 total for the stat and the timing belt. They're saying 5.5hrs labor, about 7 hrs total.
I am supposed to drive to LA in 2 hours... we had reservations for hotel, etc to have a vacation weekend.
Accounting screwed up and I didn't get paid last week either.
13 days into this freaking car and already I'm getting pretty pissed off.

Just bear with it; got mine at Audi dealer with 18k miles, and it went into limp home mode as I left the lot after the sale. Someone washed my engine and blew a sensor.
