Will get Vag-com to check further. Was wondering if any of you had had the exact same circumstance(every time when shifts to second), and if so, what was the resolution? PRND32 all flash once and then light solid on the instrument cluster only. Have'nt seen any light response on the shifter itself(if that means anything). Goes away after turning off and re-starting, but is back immediately when hits second.m Any info appreciated.

If so, start in first, get up to speed, say 20 MPH, then take your foot off the gas and quickly shift through 2nd to third using tip....will it work?
Tozo had the same problem with his 02 tranny, could get it past second as described....it was a bad o-ring on one of the clutches.

I should have told you that it's a 97 with no tiptronic retrofit. It behaves the same whether putting in drive or moving the shifter. After hitting 2nd, it has that slipping feeling and lights the dash trans position letters that it's supposed to do when in the "protective" limp mode. If you pull over and cycle the key, it takes off(pulls) normally from first gear. I sure hope there's a good possibility of an electrical/solenoid problem because this trans has just been rebuilt, os should I say replaced with a rebuilt.

There are a series of six clutches in the tranny.....it sounds like one of them is not working.....as in Tozo's case, one of the o-rings failed.....and the hydraulic pressure coudn't work correctly....
From his picture poster, I'm sure he'll chime in later.
The clutch asssembly:

And the o-ring that failed in the middle with the blue stuff on it!

With vag-com you could do an output test of the solenoids to see if they are working correctly.
I would get in touch with your rebuilder.

If you don't have any fault code, then it is likely the same problem that I had. You will have 732 incorrect gear ratio because of the slipping clutch, but hopefully you will have some solenoid code too. I would go back to the rebuilder.
