What's wrong with it? Why does it need to be replaced?
You can look at some more info on audipages....

This has been a common problem in A6's, but never in A8's.....one other person reported it recently on their A8.
Click on the thread below.....read through the whole thing....I don't think you need a new tranny....probably just a control valve....but never have gotten my hands on one to troubleshoot with vag-com.
If you live in the Chicago area, I'll help you out with troubleshooting, which is free!

Read this whole thread

NYC Metro area so a little too far away - Ive been told im better off buying a used one rather than a rebuild - had the tranny checked out at my local Audi service dealer and they told me I needed a replacement - now just trying to minimize the financial pain.

It's better to buy a used one versus a rebuilt one? What kind of reasoning is that?
BTW, stealers don't know anything about ZF trannies or to even perform output tests as I outlined above.....they just know it's 10K for a new one.....
In the future, get your fluid and filter changed every 20K miles.
My opinion is that your tranny is probably still good....
Good luck!

My 2000 A8L had a loss of reverse gear before I bought it and the owner had the transmission replaced under warranty. That is what Audi told the dealer to do after consulting. Doesn't mean it couldn't be fixed but I ended up with a 7000mile old transmission which is hard to complain about.
