It looks like my latest coolant leak is the water pump...

I pulled the driver side timing cover and there is a definite leak coming from the water pump (coolant on the bottom of the timing shock/spring assembly right underneath the water pump). So I guess I will be replacing the water pump here soon... best count on me coming up to Chicago for a weekend when you're ready Paul!
I looked at the timing belt replacement instructions to see how much I need to do to get just the water pump out (TB was replaced by PO about 20k miles ago). I definitely need to release the tension off the TB, and remove the spring/shock tensioner assembly. Once I do that, I can pull the water pump. But at that point, I think I will need to lock the cams (special tools, which only Paul has..), to prevent the belt from slipping and knocking the timing out of whack. Essentially, it's almost as much work as a TB change. I MIGHT not have to take the passenger side TB cover off, which will save a little work.
On another note, I decided to stick it out a lil longer w/ the A8. Although these repairs are a PITA, for the price I can't get a car that's nearly as nice, and if I do get a comparably equipped SUV w/ AWD, my payment will nearly triple.... it would take a lot more repair bills than what I've done, and need to do, for it to make financial sense.

replace the waterpump when he did the timing belt 25k miles ago. How ignorance can these people be. The waterpump HEPU I ordered was only $68.

I know I will be busy after that....
....maybe you can come up on a Friday, we'll tear the car apart that night....and in the morning finish it....
Yes, we'll have to lock the cams....but think, you'll be the expert when done!
And yes, I will make you do all the work while I sit back and bark orders!
;-)
Send me an email and we can set it up.
