well i ordered the oil cooler pipe with orings and the figure 8 seal. are there any internal seals that i should also replace?

Yes, I would (and did). For your car, it's gasket set 077 198 070 (accessible once the housing is off the block) seals between the cooler matrix and housing....about $30 from these guys :

The tough part is getting the housing on and off the block...might as well rebuild it while it's off.
It "could" be the source of your "mixing" problem, IF (worst case scenario) the cooler matrix itself is not breached internally.

great - i thought i read before that there were some internal seals as well. thought i saved the link but couldn't find it. will be tackeling the rear output seal and the oil filter housing this coming weekend as long as everything shows up. with any luck the car will stop dripping oil on the driveway...
