The tough part is getting the housing on and off the block...might as well rebuild it while it's off.
It "could" be the source of your "mixing" problem, IF (worst case scenario) the cooler matrix itself is not breached internally.

Yes, I would (and did). For your car, it's gasket set 077 198 070 (accessible once the housing is off the block) seals between the cooler matrix and housing....about $30 from these guys :
