Lower door moldings, exterior
So I took these apart today to get an idea of how they work. My wife had yanked one off the door partially and I was wondering what needed to be fixed.
Essentially, the rubber molding is captured in a bracket, and then the bracket is tightened from the inside of the car via two philips head self-tapping sheet metal screws.
When you tear a moulding, the sheet metal screws are yanked thru the metal bracket, enlarging the threaded hole making it worthless for any re-use.
While you can snap the rubber molding back into place after removing it completely and re-seating it, you will no longer be able to clamp the entire assembly down onto it, since the screws can no longer bite into the mounting bracket.
What to do? Im going to try larger sheet metal screws, first. We'll see how that works out.
