Any ideas - I couldn't get the clunk to repeat itself. Cruising around 80 mph when wife decided she wanted off at next exit, so floored it while in D - got a very big clunk sound from trans (or torque converter?), as if something had been previously stuck (or loose?) and had just become unstuck. I tried to see if it would happen again to no avail.

Had trans service (OEM oil & filter) last week and have had no problems with trans ever. Shifts fine, especially in Tip. 64k miles

If I'm just cruising along the highway in 5th and then really push the pedal down hard, it will downshift 2 gears ro 3rd and sometimes give a big clunk before it goes to light speed.

I don't think it's a big deal, somewhat normal.

The funny part is, on the track when giving the gas and using all the torque all the time, the tranny works like a champ and you never notice any of these things....only when it is lightly loaded and then it gets loaded up do you notice these things.

Because when i got my tranny service done it kicked down from 5 to 3 but didnt engage completley.. then i noticed i was 3.5 qts low on fluid and gave audi a piece of my mind

Hmmm - I'd better look just in case - how do I check tranny fluid level?

Mine does that too sometimes - 97 4.2Q. I think it's "normal." I've had my tranny fluid changed too. Most of the time it's very smooth. And - congrats to your wife - I like the way she drives!!!!
