Default Miss-firing

I have a problem which is VERY reminissent of an old issue i had.

I recently started my car to find that it sounds very 'rough' and the cat light has come on.

The last time this happened (which was about 2 years ago) i had it checked by audi where they said that one of the ignition switches had malfunctioned.

Each cylinder has one and as one had failed it was only firing on 7 cylinders (hence the cat light because there was unburnt fuel going into the cat)

My questions is this:

the part they replaced is part number V4D0 905 351 909029/CONT-UNIT

and i want to know if i ordered the part myself if i could replace it myself. Is it difficult (they charged over 2 hours labour before) and is there any other work that will need to be done post the fix. Also would i need any fancy tools?

many thanks

chris

Default Re: Miss-firing

i've been reading through the audiworld forums and can use my vagcom this evening to find out the cylinder number which is misfiring.

will this be easy to physically locate ? and (paulw i'm hoping you can help) is that part i mentioned going to be easy to replace once i know which of the eight it is malfunctioning?

thanks in advance

that's what it says on the invoice. When i spoke to audi to enquire as to the part - i have them the V4D0 905 351 part and they equated this to a control unit (of which there are 2 in the car)

Default send me an email and Ill send you a diagram. -looks easy

just off to work so may be tonight my time but buy the part.
It appears to be a control unit /one per bank / for ignition coil packs and looks a b reeze to fit

Default I believe that you are referring to a coil pack. Yes, very EZ. If you've changed (or know how) to

change a spark plug on the A8 you've already had your hands on it.

Default a8 misfire

i am having problem with my 98 a8 quattro missfire code detected at cylinder #3 i swaped the coil with an other one same problem on #3 coil worked fine in an other cylinder, i dont get any sparks from #3 at all i see 3 wire going in one is reading 12v when it is unplugged same as other cylinders, when i plug it in third wire reads 12v as well like ither working coils, i dont know what i should get from the wire in the middle, that must be the trigger and that is the only one that i couldnt trouble shoot. what do u recommend
