A mod that needs to be figured out.....
....how to put the "S" shift program into the 01 S8's.....
I was at the dealer yesterday and saw an 02 S8 that I figured Dave Head might like, so I looked it over, know the salesman, so he told me to take it for a drive. I did.....and OMG that "S" position on the shifter makes it like a F1 type car!
I was thinking later if we could figure it out, maybe it needs a new TCU, and if so, we could hook it up, and then just wire the "S" across the "4" position on the shifter.

It's in the TCM -- the range switch didn't change for 2002, and the new diode's unrelated
The diode can be added to 2000 or 2001 cars as part of TSB 37-02-02. It seeks to prevent headlight voltage entering the TCM through the Tip input.
Because the range switch is the same in 2002 as in 2001, you shouldn't need to change any wiring.
I looked at the wiring when there was a forum discussion about making steering wheel Tip buttons work in D, like they do on a 2002. Provided the steering wheel Tip is wired as documented, changing to a 2002 TCM should get you this too.
You may want a newer shift gate, especially if putting the lever in 3 or 2 with a 2002 TCM triggers limp home.
No idea if the PRND432 display on the instrument cluster comes from the TCM or is programmed into the cluster, and if the latter, how it handles a mismatch.

Re: A mod that needs to be figured out.....
Yes, yes, yes! The only thing I regret about buying my '01 is its lack of S mode. (Made all the worse because my wife has it on her Touareg yet never uses it.)
Don't think I'll be able to offer much technical assistance, but if you need a guinea pig, let me know...

What is S mode?
This sounds exciting, but... Can someone please explain what the S mode (sport I presume) is all about, and what the differences are? Thanks on behalf of All of us not fortunate enough to have driven a later car.
