There was a limited manual version in Continental Europe. Never made it to to the UK or US afaik. If you browse through vagcat.com you'll find '6 speed manual gearbox with transfer box and torsen differential
37/9 / DGV (1) 01E300044NX' and 'flywheel
/ manual- gearbox: AHC,AKH 15 034105313A'. There is also a pedal set up with clutch and mounting parts. I think the AHC only appeared in S8s in the UK, but it seems it will take a 6 speed manual.

lots of them in Europe, with the V6 engines (2.8 and 2.5TDI) and even some with fwd
early S8 had 6-speed manual, that's the only D2 V8 I know of with manual, D2 V6 had 5-speed.
