google them for more info that you'd ever want to know.
I *might* buy from them if I could go pick it up in person and inspect the part. Still, you'd probably just get a used trans and not a rebuilt one.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ripoffreport.com/searchresults.asp?q1=ALL&q5=&q4=Phoenix+Ha rd+Parts&q6=&q3=&q2=&q7=&searc htype=0&submit2=Search%21">interesting info</a></li></ul>

And look for "hunting and thumping" under transmission. CalG posted other problems.
It's staying in one gear, but feels like it is shifting. You're screwed, live with it.
That's why I have a S8 now. My 97 was getting old and I couldn't live with it any longer.

What is the actual fix? A new tranny? A new valve body? I am willing to spend up to a couple thousand on this problem, just need to know were to go

That's probably the cheapest and most reliable fix.
I have not ever heard of anybody fixing the hunt to date on a pre facelift car.
The facelift cars have not reported the problem as of yet. They are newer, but plenty with over 100K miles (or I should say most over 100K miles). They have drive by wire and transmissions with later design changes incorported.

with a pre-facelift car to have the "hunt" fixed!
My transmission shifts perfectly after having it rebuilt. Dealing with the shop was an absolute nightmare and I could not have been more disappointed with the service that I received, but in the end it seems to work.
@ PaulW - Are you simply saying you have yet to hear of someone fix JUST the hunt on a pre-facelift car? Or are you saying even after people are getting full rebuilds, it's still there?
Thanks!
