I put a used facelift VB in my pre face lift (1999) A8 with good results. Note, I said good, not perfect.
There may be something to both hardware and software issues. Check the recent posted article from Sonnax regarding a facelift "thump" fix.
Wouldn't be nice to get this one figured out short of a complete rebuild?

Was on mine. But I did not replace the valve body. Gabor knows how to fix the dropout, but the hunt hasn't been mastered.

and have the VB gone through .Like the link that was posted from Germany
For about $550! you got to be kidding! (IT looked like that includes a fluid and filter change too!)
And then, if the hunt and thump continues, a rebuilt TC and transmission "freshening".
Can I really get a facelift S for my car and $4k? (Honestly, I like the looks of the prefacelift)
Oh! where lies the evil??

But my car was in their shop for over 3 months, which is inexcusable. By that time, they could have probably disassembled and rebuilt my CAR 5 times over. Too bad they didn't know what they were doing.
I was only 18 and was pretty ticked at the thought of getting the run around because of my age. I had to fight tooth-and-nail to get a rental car.
My experience sounds like that of some folks who dealt with Phoenix Transmissions!

Just for the record, I have approx. 144,000 miles on my 99' and it neither hunts nor thumps (knock on wood), with the sole exception of slowing to a stop coasting uphill. (Maybe, it was already rebuilt, I'll never know). Could Audi have started early putting facelift trannies into pre-facelift cars? Mine is fairly close to the line of distinction by manufacture date.

Nearly 200K miles , over the road miles, very little around town. Less shifting means less wear and tear!
OH! and 135K on the second timing belt ;-))
Are these A8's great or what!!!

From ZF with a Torque Converter.
But "a couple of thousand" is only half the ticket! But par for high end transmissions.
I Want one!
