I pulled the TCM out last night and have all the part numbers from it. I'm shopping on line today for a new one. I saw an old thread from PaulW about getting a "newer" one with the suffix "BH" as this may correct some of the delayed acceleration issues? My TCM part number is 4D0 927 156 K. Any thoughts on what TCM are "best"?
The unit seems fine - almost new looking - am I on the right track. I'll also buy a VAG COM set-up today.
Also are we all calling this thing a "TCM" or a "TCU"?

I also have an '87 4kq at my son's in Denver(restoration in progress). My wife has an A3 3.2. The S8, after I drove it back to Colorado in April, is now parked in our Condo's garage in SD again. Yes, I'm sick and I'm under orders to have a garage sale. I'm tempted to sell everything but the S6 (and her A3) and place an order for the R8.

So how about somewhere in Cental or SE or SW denver area? If we cam make it the Boulder guys can't complain too much.

ETKA says the following:
4D0 927 156 K for DPZ, DMS transmission code.
4D0 927 156 BH for DTE transmission code up to VIN 4D-X-008500
and
4D0 927 156 CR for DTE transmission code from VIN 4D-X-008501 and up.
I do not know if these parts are interchangable.

If you clear the codes and the low voltage code comes back, that's worth tracking down.
It seems very unlikely that the transmission activity could be read as misfiring by the engine computer. Next time it happens why not put it in neutral, keep the rpms about where they were and see if the rough running and blinking CEL continue?

I've got the VIN number (WAUBG84D9VN00196) but where do I find the transmission code? It is a new transmission recently installed. Is it possible that a different tranny was put in that isn't compatible with the existing TCM? I wonder...

Thanks for that suggestion. It makes sense that the TCM would not trigger misfires - that sounds like another problem like a wet ECU or ??
I do think the two issues are related because they happen nearly at the same time - I get a deep bass vibration that I think is a rapid gear change and another less severe vibration that feels like engine miss. I can stop the gear change issue by shifting to 2nd or 3rd, but I still get misfires.
Must order Vag-Com today.
