So i was driving home from a wedding in our freshly washed, new Tozo'd TPS-ed 98 A8 and she was running pretty good. Well i got to a stop light and as i attempted to make a right from a dead stop, the car made a terribly loud thump and slam, and lo and behold, on came the LIMP MODE lights (PRND432 all lit up). I gave it some gas and the car wouldnt even move. After a couple key off/on attempts the car would go out of limp but as soon as the gas was applied, SLAM, back to limp. I eventually realized that you CAN drive the car, it just takes a while for it to get up to a driveable speed. Anyway, i got it home hooked it up to my trial version of VAGCOM and found i had 2 codes under the tranny section: 17114 & 17087. If i am correct, this is probably the code of death, no? HELP ME, as this is my main transportation to work!

Well after searching thru the archives all weekend i decided to call up a local Cottman Transmission who is comfortable and familiar with ZFs and i am currently waiting for AAA to show up and tow the beast out of my garage. Based on what the guy at Cottman said, it will probably run between $2200-$4500 out the door and if he gets it today, it should be out by the end of the week...which is AWESOME! I will report back probably tomorrow with what he said is the problem. Cottman sounds like a pretty good Tranny company. THey will diagnose your tranny for free, tell you that it IS infact your trans and then the full teardown of the tranny runs you $500. Once out and apart they will tell you exactly what is wrong and give you a quote...at that point if you dont like it, just tell them to put it back together and all you owe them is $500. I'd think thats pretty good. They also offer a 12mo./12000 mile warranty on the rebuild (Not great but better than nothing).
Has anyone else used a Cottman Transmission shop in your area? THoughts?
