I think its the best way to go, because you never know what you going to get otherwise, and if you planning to keep the car and been nice to your tranny it should last for quite a bit after rebuild.

ZF rebuild unit has unlimited miles for a year.
How much time would it take to rebuild one?
Is it possible for a local shop to do as good of a job as ZF?

It takes like 2-3 (with or without lunch) hours to remove the tranny. 3-4 hours to rebuild it and 4-5 hours to reinstall, refill and test the tranny. There is a removal procedure on audipages.
