Hi all,
I have been doing a lot of reading and searching, and I have the owners manual on order but it's taking it's sweet time getting here. I thought in the meantime you might help with a few questions:
1) What is the button on the LH of the steering column for, opposite the ignition switch?
2) Is there a way to turn on delayed power for the stereo so it keeps running after I shut down the engine?
3) I have a weird occssional sound from the center vent/stereo area. Something like: "clickclick...click...click...clickclick...click.. .click"
Very regular but at seemingly random intervals. Sounds almost like the cassette transport (but soft) but no cassette is in there.
Car is a 2001 A8 Quattro with the console mounted **** for the menus, etc.
Thanks, great site, great car.
-Joel.

Welcome aboard!
1) The button controls whether the steering wheel will retract out of the way when you pull the key out.
2) Not that I know of, but if you turn the radio off, and then back on again, you can listen with the key off. Just remember to turn it off when done... (at least on my pre-facelift it works that way)
3) No idea, but I'm sure some of the gurus on here will know.

The button on the steering column is for the easy exit steering wheel retraction.
Does the stereo still worlk with the key in the ignition??
The click may be the fan[does it occur when the climate control is switched off?] or a water valve opening and shutting

You can try readapting it with vag-com or just get a new one for about $120 and replace it.
You will need vag-com most likely to figure out which one it is.

until you take the keys out of the ignition. Other than that, like posted below, you can turn the radio off, then back on again without your keys.

And if you want to troubleshoot it first, go to measuring blocks and page up through them, the actual numbers should be within 5 units of the target numbers, it's about 20-125 as I recall, open to close.
Then do an adaption, it will cycle all the dampers and get new stop positions on them.
If one of the numbers in measuring blocks is off more than 5, that's your problem damper.
