IMO, the A8 is much nicer inside and out than the Phaeton. Call me a snob, but I would much rather have a 7 Series, S Class or A8 than the VW Phaeton for $60K+. As usual, for those who agree or beg to differ with me, you all have equal support from 2tonictim. 2tonictim's support for anyone's opinions usually helps here on AudiWorld.

platform sharing machine has to switch to affixing only 4 rings instead of VWs and 4 rings. They'll make more money by running it only as an Audi when they see the American market is not ready to shell out that kind of cash to spend any time at the U.S. VW dealers, IMHO. The Toureg will kill the Cayenne and maybe the Audi SUV will get a chance to badge off the Leipzig assembly line.

I read this somewhere. Can't remember all the details, but it was something along these lines.
Introducing the Phaeton within the Volkswagen group would lift the overall image of the brand. This is quite simple and I'm sure it makes sense to all of us. After all, I believe this is also what happened with Audi with the introduction of the A8.
But this simple truth has consequences on the rest of VW's fleet. It should in fact cause a shift in sales. A Passat owner might not easily go and buy a Phaeton, but its presence may push that person towards a better (equiped) Passat.
They also gave an example involving the Golf. Loads of these little cars all sold, especially in Europe I think. But the most Golfs sold are pretty much standard vehicles. Now with the introduction of the luxurious and prestigious Phaeton, VW expects to start selling more of the higher end Golfs. And those cars are far more profitable then the standard ones.
The Phaeton's image should rub of on the other VW's and cause greater demand for more luxurious cars with better engines and so on. Basically: they think they'll sell more profitable cars because of Phaeton. Perhaps also luring over people that previously looked towards other brands. Not necessarily to buy the top of the line, but to get them inside high profit VW's.

exploited in the Piech era. When the Phaeton fails, they will lose nothing by only producing this car as an A8 with upgrades from the Phaeton mold.

Despite the skeleton, these cars will be so close that sales cannibalization is guaranteed. I bet people will post irate 'nice VW' compliments from the general public in future conversations here.
