Default new catalytic convertor

Got a new catalytic convertor courtesy of Audi!! Here's how it went: When I first got the car('01 S8), the CEL went on intermittently with no change in driveability. I thought it was the gas gap because it would go away. So I plugged in my trusty VAG-COM and got the code "left bank catalyst intermittent malfunction". I also ran an emissions test and it failed. After reading several posts, esp. the gentleman in Minnesota with a similar problem, I brought the car to the dealership armed with this data. I just told them my CEL was intermittent and wanted to see what would be their diagnosis. Within a half hour, the service guy came out and said I will need a new catalytic convertor and I am covered under warranty. He said Audi warranties the emissions equipment for 8 yrs./80,000 miles. Its a small victory and I will savor it.
Thanks, Bob

Default Funny, but I don't remember hearing any pre facelift cat problems

Only the facelift cars. And now the S8's.....well, mine has 73K on it now!

Default I've had intermittent cat failure codes in my pre-facelift, but rarely, and they seem to follow ...

...lots of short trips around town and not letting the cats heat fully. Haven't had one in a year or more, so they don't seem to lead to true cat failures. Never come close to failing emissions.

I talked to the stealer about it when my car was still under 8 & 80, but I sure didn't get any offers of new converters! It was more like talking to Dick Cheney about whether he's ever been responsible for a bad decision:

"No. Wanna discuss it further with the one-armed man?"

Default It's actually 10yrs/100,000 miles. If your dealer doesn't know have them check it out....

This is at least for the 02 S8's, as mentioned I just had one of mine replaced... Bummer is, we have 4 of these babies don't we?
