Default

yes, beyond exotic materials, Power is essentially Torque X RPMs. Raise the RPMs and get more HP.

Default Who's its closer competitor?

The easy response would be the AMG/M-class competitionn, but in a strange way I'd say the Maserati Quattroporte. Look at the Maser's specs:

Engine 4.2 liter V8 (basically a Ferrari engine)
Horsepower 400 @ 7000 rpm (50hp and 2-cyl down)
Torque 333 lb-ft @ 4500 rpm
Weight 4253 lbs (and I thought the S8 is a porker!)
Weight Distribution 47 front / 53 rear
Power to Weight Ratio 10.6 lbs per hp
0-60 mph 5.1 seconds
Top Speed 170 mph

For the price the D3 S8 will cost fully loaded, I would be more tempted to get the sexy Italian. The Maser is oozing sexiness!!

Default No, that's not how things work.

Every engine design has a horsepower peak. Simply making it turn faster will not get you more HP.

It will make <i>less</i> HP once you've passed the HP peak RPM, by definition.

Default Yes, but the 4.2 V8's HP peak is at much higher RPMs than the torque peak...

..same with most V10s. Hence the faster you make an engine rev, with lower friction losses, the more HP you get. In general.

Default I must be misunderstanding you ...

<center><img src="http://www.xxtuning.com/dynocharts/image2.php?Car1=63&amp;Car2=0"></center><p>Here is the HP/TQ graph for an A6.

Note that the HP peak is well below the redline. Making the engine turn faster will not make more HP after you reach the HP peak RPM.

In order to accomplish what you suggest (increase HP by raising the RPM limit via valvesprings and valves), a new camshaft and intake runners would have to be designed as well.

Certainly, valve float has to be addressed but it's not the only thing.

Default Absolutely, goes without saying that new internals are needed to move the HP

peak to a higher point. Simply spinning it higher may not get you more power, depending on the Power/Torque characteristics of the engine.

From physics, power is the work done per amount of time. Units of power are those of the work per amount of time, for example: foot-pounds per minute or joules per second. So, in order to increase power, you need to increase ft.lb. per time unit. If you can extend the torque curve, and where it peaks, to higher RPMs, you get more HP.

Or, to put it in another way, IF the torque curve could be made to be as flat as possible, higher RPM would give you more HP.

BTW, this is the D2 S8's power/torque curve.
