Default Next issue. Please give me some ideas. No reverse, and no R in the dash. BLANK.

Ok I like this car, and do not want to buy a lexus....

I just came back after dropping a friend off, put the car in reverse to back into the garage, and felt like neutral. I look at the dash, and there is NO PRND432. Hmm. I look down, I am in reverse. Hmm. Pull the parking brake while in reverse, get out and the reverse lights are lit. This car is definitely in neutral, not slipping.

So I go around the block, stop try again. same thing. Pull into my driveway forwards, shut the car off, wait, turn it back on, same thing.

Also to note:
P = Park, and it works
R = BLANK, feels like neutral
N = Neutral, and feels like neutral
D = Drive, works fine.
4 = D, does not change to 4
3 = D, does not change to 3
2 = BLANK, feels like drive

My triptronic works fine, nothong funning there.

So after I checked all that out, I put in in 2 and push down, and move it around a bit. I did not notice anything specific, but while in 2 ( BLANK ) I see the PRND432 slightly coming on, flickering, not like a code, but like a bad connection.

I drove my A8 all day today, every single time I locked the doors ( arming the alarm with the remote) I never got both parking lights to blink. Only one side. Annoying. But the parking lights work perfectly.

The rear driver side door is still out ( no red, no puddle lights).

The rear passenger side B pillar HVAC vent still has no light.

IN order:
Back driver side door worked SOMETIMES. Then NEVER worked around the same time I lost the light in the HVAC vent, whish seems to have happened around the same time as the one side parking lights flash during alarming thing.
Now this whole reverse, 4, 3, 2 thing.

My free time is very limited. My mother is very sick ( brain tumor ), and needs help with everything and is getting worse by the day. I (up to NOW) use the A8 to bring my mother to her radation treatments. I'm the only child, and I lost my dad when I was 20. So any help to locate this issue ASAP will be very much apperciated.

I do not have a VAG tool yet, and still lacking the bentley manual. So if anyone can send me any pics, of the grounding areas for these devices ( if they are in the same area maybe), this tranny switch for the reverse lights, and to tell the tranny to shift? Any thing else you can think of. I brain is just too busy with all thats on my mind.

TIA,

Default I am sorry to hear the bad things that happened to you.

I would try to disconnect the TCU and clean the connector ( under the hood, passenger side, under the windshield). Make sure, that there is no water or moisture on the bottom of the box. No PRND432 means there is no signal from the TCU to the ECU. All highlighted PRND432 means safe home ( limp ) mode with operating TCU, no PRNHD432 means safe home mode with inoperative TCU. The B pillar HVAC has a special bulb, mine is out too. No blinking parking lights could be a different issue, I would not worry about it.

Default One more thing.

Try to play with the shifter. If the cable needs adjustment, it can cause things like this. Also the Multifunction Switch F125 can be bad too. It is connected to the shifter cable on the driver's side of the tranny.

Default Yeah I played with the shifter, moving it very very slowly through the gears, with no change. Soo...

Since NO PRND432 means those two things you mentioned, which might apply? I have it, just not in every gear.

I am also very suspect of that F125 swtich. The last two weeks I have not been driving the car. Just the work truck. With spring here, there has been a lot of moisture on the ground, and dampness in the garage. Anyone have real pics of this F125 part? So when I get under there this weekend, I can see it as it is, rather than a black and white drawing

Yeah luck has been far from me this year.

I emailed you a picture of the TCU. This switch can cause a lot of trouble, but if the switch is bad, you would not have the reverse light on.

Hey Dan,
Sorry to hear about all your troubles. I live near you and I have a VAG. Unfortunately I'm heading down to NYC tomorrow to go to the auto show. I won't be back until sunday. If you are still having trouble with the car, maybe we can meet half-way and get some info from the computer. If it comes to that I'll e-mail you. Good luck.

Default Besides cleaning, hit it with some Stabilant contact enhancer.

It's made for exactly that sort of problem.

I learned of the stuff from a computer columnist many years ago, but actually bought it as a VW part number, off the shelf from a VW parts department. I'll post a part number a little later.

Default Well, in a previous post someone spoke about its two connections for reverse....

...one connection for the trans, and one for the mirror/reverse lights. Could it be that the switch is infested with water/corrosion because of a damaged seal, or broken part?

All of these problems have came up within the last month. In the last month I have have not driven it as much as in the past. Less than ten times. So the car has been sitting A LOT.

Thanks for the help Guys, I need it. I already have so much on my mind, this is just over the top for me currently. And I am sick as the same time. Grr.
