I have a friend considering an A8 and is interested in the ESP option (We test drove an A6 w/ ESP and he was impressed). Am I correct that the regular A8 does NOT have an ESP option? That would mean the only way to get ESP is to go with an A8L? I hope I'm wrong.

I think ESP was optional on the 2000 A8 (standard on L model). You can check for yourself by going to www.audiusa.com.

They are on the A8 as well, at least the tip controls were supposed to be on my A8L, but it was an early '01, so it showed as a deleted option...

Took delivery on A8L on 12/7 with Tip on the steering wheel.

Lease was up on my '98 A8 and I tried to get another A8 (not an L) but couldn't find any - dealer says there's none around. "Settled" for an A8L, Silver w/ black. Really wanted tungsten grey but, again, no luck.

As for Tip, still breaking car in (500 miles). My '98 (and my daughter's A4) had Tip but rarely used it. Maybe I'll be more inclined with the controls at hand. The transmission "programming" feels a bit different than the '98 so I'm still getting used to it ... or maybe it's just the "learning" phase.

I'll report more after I get some more miles in.
