Hi All.
Ever since the broke into my 1997 2.8 A8 I can't
I can't select reverse . the only gear that works is drive. i'm not sure if the gears will change as i don't dare drive it. all the gear lights indicator on the dash is all on same time.
could this be an electrical fault or gear box gone ??
any help is appreciated

that the seal in the transmission that holds the fluid pressure for engagement of the reverse gear has failed.
I believe it is called the F seal. As in "my $*@#ing F seal just blew".
To replace the seal requires opening up the transmission case, and at that point, you might as well rebuild the whole thing while it's out. Or buy another ZF tranny.
Did they put a 2.8 in the A8? I've not ever seen one here in the US.

However, if you loose the F Clutch seal, it will normally not produce any fault codes, nor will the transmission go into limp mode. That's only on forward gears.

What happened when I lost reverse

The 4.2 uses the 5HP24A, but smaller engines do not as far as I know. And the 5HP24A does not go into limp-home mode with all the gear positions lit at once when its clutch F seal fails. Most or all of our experience here with reverse failures is with the 5HP24A, so may not be directly usable. You might search the A4 and A6 forums to see whether anybody there with a 2.8 and 5 speed automatic have had the same problem.
