Default noise from body flex

I have a noise in my 00 A8 L (and others I have had) that I also had in several V8's I owned. The 'chattering' (for lack of a better description) noise is caused by something in the door/window frame rubbing or vibrating against something...and it has always been the case in these cars that rolling the window down an inch will stop the noise.

I thought the problem is caused by body flex moving the door/window so I am a bit confused that the much more stiff body of the A8 still has the problem. The only other clue I can offer is that the noise never happens in cold weather.

Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know exactly what the source is and how to solve the problem?

Default Never had the problem.

From what you describe, I'd get some Aerospace 303 Protectant, and wipe down the door and window gaskets, first with 409 or a similar cleaner on a rag, then with Aerospace 303.

Default Re: Never had the problem.

JimR's right...had this problem in my old S8 and a little squirt of silicone on the gaskets cured it. May have to do it on occasion to keep the rattles away. Now, with that solved, I'm off to my job moonlighting as a legislator. There oughta be a law ya know, once 3M makes a campaign contribution

Default could it be from the rubber around the doors and windows....these can dry out and cause such a noise

you can spray with silcon spray and it should help.

Default Do not spray silicone on the car! Spray it on a rag and then apply it to the rubber parts.

Silicone spray can do harm to your paint.

Default my 99 is doing this

and it has me worried about the long-term durability of the frame. Steel is more ductile, so it can flex and still retain its strength, but aluminum should not flex as it will eventually crack. Is my ASF a "lifetime" item, just like my ZF transmission fluid?

Default I've always ordered it. You might be able to get it at a good boating supplies store.
