but never got one. I happened to be at the dealer later in the year and saw an A8 in the show room. Locked! I asked if I could have a look at it and the sales person actually had to get permission from the manager to open the car for me! "Was is possible to take a test drive" I asked. "Sorry", he said, "it was the only A8 available and they wanted to keep it without adding miles to it".

I'm a past A8 owner and really wanted to learn more about the new one.

Now, this is were I'm getting really sore. I just got an invitation to a private viewing and test drive of the Phaeton! I guess VW is serious about stealing customers away from Audi. I guess I should just be happy that someone at Audi/VW want my business?

And that said, I have a pretty good dealer.

No doubt, your experience is pretty stupid on that dealer's part.

Its amazing to find such disparity among the dealers selling this car. My dealer got his first batch in June(3 cars)and called me that day. He said that I could test drive it as long as I wanted to!! Go figure.

So many different stories about dealers...The dealer I bought my new A8L from in 01 stinks but I just happened to pass another dealer one day and stopped in just to look at the changes that were made on the 04... A salesman came right up to me and said (How about it if I pull the 04 right out of the showroom so you can take a test drive sir?) Now this was the only 04 they had on the lot at the time...I didn't even get a chance to say a word and I never bought a car from them! He let me go alone for a drive and said take your time...I went for a 10 minute ride, thanked him and he gave me his card then I left..He did not push anything on me! This was a small town dealer and they seem to care more..I guess me pulling up in an A8 also helped...If I buy another Audi, you can be sure it will be from this guy! This is a salesman! It would be worth the trip to go back there instead of the big dealership I bought mine from...They stink and their service stinks..They just were the only one around that had the right car and color I wanted...A fully loaded Silver A8L with the silver leather and suede package! I also had the S8 mirrors put on and had those big 18 inch rims polished to a mirror shine plus all the windows are tinted! OOOOH BOY! I'll try to post photos soon....

I guess they just don't sell enough A8s to justify having one as a 'demo'.

My father got an inviation to the launch event, but no inviation for test drive. There is however several new A8Ls parked in one of the dealership lot here in Toronto, which seems to be all sold. No demo on the floor yet the last time I was there.

When the new TT and S4 arrived this year, my local dealer would NOT allow test drives because they only had one or two of each model. I asked them how a customer was supposed to know if they liked the car or not, and the sales manager responded, "what's not to like? oh they'll like it." Seems like the dealerships are getting rather cocky these days.
