From the Meguiar's forums .. amateur on his first try using a Porter-Cable RO polisher, like the one I have.
Almost impossible to ruin paint with one. Not like a high-speed rotary buffer.
Tape-stripe the hood and do one side only, first to see the improvement!
Yeah Yeah the 2nd picture is a red SINGLE STAGE paint which is fully oxidized, and doesn't really jibe with our clear-coated paints but the 1st and 3rd pics are restored clearcoats.

Im just a lame amateur when it comes to detailing but the people in the AudiWorld detailing forum can tell you 12 ways to remove squashed bugs from your cigarette lighter.
I attended a Meguire's detailing workshop last year at a local Audi owner's event. What I do is this:
-Wash (auto soap, not dish soap) .. USE TWO BUCKETS .. one for the super-dirty water and one for the cleaner, no-so dirty water. Put dirty sponge in filthy bucket first and then after it's cleaner, put it into the cleaner bucket and then onto the car.
-Clay Bar with detailer spray (can use water) A clay bar easily shears off all the tar spots and microscopic crap stuck into the paint surface. When your car is "clean" you will be shocked how brown/black the clay bar surface gets anyway.
-Cleaner Wax (with Porter-Cable and default white pad)
-Glossy sealer wax. (with Porter-Cable and a different default white pad)
In both wax processes, I remove the wax with a good quality Microfiber towel. Get the good ones .. the cheap ones have almost no "fluff", just base weave.
If there's a scratch in the clearcoat, I use Meguiar's Scratch-X .. perhaps multiple times .. before waxing.
If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, it will not come out without a dangerous rotary buffer and professional (dangerous) polishing compounds.

--- AudiWorld Detailer's Forum ---

Yes, I have looked at the fourm before but found it to be so thick with advanced information that it was hard to find basic, simple answers. I am a detailing novice. Most of the things they discuss seem to assume a lot of knowlege that I don't have.
Your answer was helpful, thanks!
Troy's guide to car care nirvana is also good in the tech articles section.
