Default O2 sensor problem?

I reset my check engine light last night and drove about 20 miles before it cam back on. This is the error I get:

VAG-COM Version: Beta 402.3-S

Control Module Part Number: 4D0 907 557 M
Component and/or Version: 4.2L V8/4V MOTR AT D02
Software Coding: 01273
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
2 Faults Found:
17606 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heater Circuit: B1 S2: Electrical Malfunction
P1198 - 35-00 - -
17607 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heater Circuit: B2 S2: Electrical Malfunction
P1199 - 35-00 - -

This seems like a bad O2 sensor. Could it be anything else?

Thanks,

Default Did you check the readings with vag-com?

Do you have the Bently? Page 24-66 states:

Connect VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST), and press buttons -0- and -1- to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01 (engine running at idle) Page 01-5 .

Rapid data transfer HELP

Select function XX

Indicated on display

- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read Measuring Value Block" function 08, and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Read Measuring Value Block

Input display group number XXX

Indicated on display

- Press buttons -0-, -2- and -8- to input display group number 28 (028), and press -Q- button to confirm input.

Read Measuring Value Block 28

1 2 3 4

Indicated on display

- Check specified values for O2S heating (display fields 1-4):

Then there is a table of acceptance critiera.

It doesn't state if the car should be running or not, try it both ways, don't know if it should be cooled off either.

If it shows an open circuit, then you disconnect the electrical connector on the back of the heads and take resistiance measurements to determine what to do next.

Default Actually the problem is with the O2 sensor heater

According to Bentley. It is wierd that on O2 sensor heaters failed at the same time. I am checking the heater impedance and supply voltage right now.

I can't believe they would both fail. Make me kind of nervous.

Default Have you done any work on the car lately?

I.E. the timing belt change.....or anything on the back of the heads or changed the valve cover gaskets?

If so, it just might be a loose connector on those large connectors on the back of the motor, they just need to be mated properly.

Good luck.

Default I have not done anything, and Bentley is confusing.

It says the left and right o2 sensor heaters are run by fuses 3 and 4 in the st4 blue bank on the passenger side fuse box. The number 4 is empty and the number 3 has a 20 amp. Also when I check the wiring diagram it does not show a termination in the number st4 bank?
