Default An observation about the S8 in Ronin

I saw the movie when it oroginally came out in the theaters and loved it. I saw it a few days ago on cable and enjoyed it again, but the same thought crossed my mind again. If I remember the early part of the movie, the S8 in Ronin was modified with a nitorous kit. During the chase scenes, the S8 was chasing a run of the mill Peaugot. With all that power and mods, how come the S8 couldn't catch up to or outrun the measely Peugeot (which looked to be stock)? I can't imagine that Peugeot having more than 130 or 150 hp in stock form.

A slow day at work!

Default 2 things-

The rocket launcher adds a couple more pounds of weight. And the increased drag from having DeNiro stand through the sunroof increased wind resistance. Also- the car was pretty banged up, causing an "unsmooth" aerodynamic flow over the car.

ERT

It's slow around here too.

Default That's Hollywood!

The chase scenes would have been pretty boring if the S8 simply caught the Peugot.

Default Hollywood

Did you know that they had to disable the Quatro in that S8 for the movie? When the producers first tried to film the chase scenes, the car would not go sideways, so they disabled the front wheel drive parts to get those killer slides.

Default Keep in mind the story:

...remember, they were trying to get the case inside the car. Why would they want to outrun it? The goal was to stay with the car and either run it off the road or box it in so they could get the case.

When all else fails, *think* for a minute. ;-)

Then why did they need the nitrous kit?

Default It's a Citroen XM

Actually, the car chased by the Audi is a Citroen XM. The XM's best version was a 3 litre V6 that put out 170 bhp and delivered a 0-60 of 9.2. Unfed, the 98 S8 had 350 hp or so and 6 second sprint times. With nitrous, the Audi would have had 500+ bhp. Not a fair fight.

BTW, there is a Peugeot in the movie in the last chase. It's a 406.
