Odd noise from inside dash .. hm!

Coolant valves for heater -- they cycle if the temperature and settings call for it
Except for the center dash vent, the A8 does not regulate its heating using air dampers. Instead it turns these coolant valves on and off -- one for the left and one for the right. The other times you were sitting in the car with the key on and engine off, the interior was probably enough cooler or warmer than commanded that the valves were always open or closed, not cycling.
If you turn your climate control settings down to LO and turn down the fan so you can hear, the noise should stop. It does on my car. The noise might also stop if you turn them up to HI because the valves will be open all the time.
Mine's done it since new. It's nothing wrong unless they're much louder than before.
