Default Oh, by the way our jacks suck, big time

Paul and I both whil working on our cars had the jacks fail. Luckily Pual had a jack stand properly set and it coaught the car. I however was not as lucky. I thought the jack stand was good and then as I was pulling the wheel off the car slide forward and I dove out of the way luckly the car landed on the rim and did not crash onto the pavement. So all I can say is the jacks suck.

Default Yes, they do. I can't imagine trying to use one on a dirt shoulder or on anything with even the...

slightest slope. They are made from stamped meatal and have a very small footprint (they tip over very easily). If you ever have to use one (I did recently) make sure that the emergency brake is on, you are on a flat, solid surface, and NEVER put a body part under the car when up on one of these death traps!

Default I already knew that from the A6.

I have two decent floor jacks and a pile of jack stands in my garage.

VAG should be embarassed to put those things in VW's, let alone Audis.

Any better alternatives available that would fill a similar amount of trunk space?

Default Re: my jack isn't too bad...

its alloy, not steel btw, and has a reasonably large foot.

btw, anyone using *any* jack without preventing the vehicle moving (i always chock a rear wheel) is asking for trouble, especially on a non-flat surface. as a precaution i also put the removed wheel under the car if i don't have jack stands handy.

speaking of jack stands, where do people use them on an a8? apart from the designated jacking points that is?

Default There is a solution!

I run and instruct with the Windy City BMW club. A number of the guys have Alum. Floor Jacks. Ultra light weight and easily carried in the trunk. I'm at Road America this weekend and I'll sniff the source. I know the price was about $175.00 (Maybe Harbor Freight...Tee Hee Hee)
