It appears mine needs to be replaced. For those who have had it done, how much do Indy's normally charge for the job? Got the diagnosis a couple weeks ago from the main indy I usually go to, but after 6 calls they never got back to me with a quote. Took it to another shop yesterday and they are saying a little over 1K. Anyone know how long the job takes? I've been losing coolant for a few weeks now a little bit at a time (glad I keep a bottle in the trunk), so it looks like I'll have to get it done sooner than later.

Given the apparent complexity of the operation (from what I have read) I would try to find someone who has done one before.

If you mean the valve cover gasket (the place where the spark plugs coils go), then it took me 3 hours to do.
I have the replacement precedure from Alldata as a web page but i dont know how to attach it if any one know how...

and my indy shop wanted $700. I ordered the $50 worth of parts and going to do it myself when it warms up (and the fed-ex driver gets the ***** to drive down my road)

First shop said that, when it goes, it would be a section of the gasket in between two bolts; I would probably have about 8 minutes or so before I had to pull over and get the car towed. How long has yours been leaking? I'm trying to gauge if it's something I should get done right away or not.

There is a procedure for replacing them on Audipages as well. As the oil cooler gasket replacement was described to me, it would require removal of quite a bit on the right side of the engine. He did say that he had done the job on C6 A6's before but not on a D2 A8/S8. I asked if it would be similar to doing on an A6 4.2, but was told that the engine bay of the S8 is much more crowded in that area.

OK, then it looks like I'm being overcharged from the second shop. They charge $104/hr, and the parts from the dealer are about $100 or so; someone's been doing a little price padding.

and the car overheated. I had the T-stat, water pump and timing belt fixed and then this problem appeared.
It's been about 3 weeks now but I don't drive more than 8 miles/20 minutes at a time. I have to do my c/v boots too.
I'm pretty sure my a8 has had almost every non-tranny problem possible over the 8 months i've owned it!
