Oil Type and Viscosity? So many choices now....

Just bought some Mobil 1 today, didn't have what I needed at PepBoys, went to Kmart $4.99/qt!!! That's $43 bucks or so with tax just for the oil!
Anyways, now Mobil 1 comes with "for higher mileage cars" (red cap, 10W30) and "for new engines" (blue cap 5W30). Are they really formulated different or just different viscosity so they get the different "nameplate"?
I went with 10W30, the manual states not to drive at extended high speed driving with 5W30 above given temps, but it doesn't show a high limit for 5W30.
What do others use?

.
for a good all-purpose four season oil.
Compared to an xW30's, the 0W40 has a slightly higher viscosity at 100 oC, a temperature that I probably significantly exceed on the track.
0w30
5w30
10w30
0w40
are all good choices, just different viscosities. The extra words "for higher mileage cars" are probably just to satisfy the need to say something.

Engine Oil Classifications.

I have been happy for a few years but with the recent screwing around with the formulations, I recently bailed and went somewhere I trust - Amsoil.
I run their regular synthetic 5W30 in both cars.

For $20 a year you get the dealer pricing and some of the dealer stuff like magazines and literature. I saved more than the $20 on my first order.
The synthetic 5W30 motor oil costs $17.75 a gallon (I buy 4 gallons at a clip at $67.60 and use it in the S8, A4 and Eclipse). They sell a higher grade called series 2000 available in 0W30 and 20W50 that goes for $20/gallon. It has a longer service life in NA engines but between the Audi 10k oil interval under warranty and the Amsoil recommended 6 month interval for turbos, I dont figure it is worth the extra (it has similar friction/wear numbers to the regular synthetic).
They have a bunch of other stuff worth having too. I highly recommend their synthetic 4-stroke oil for lawn mowers/tractors (my 1 year old Toro ZTR with a Kohler engine quieted down and clearly increased power with the change over), and the 2-cycle 100:1 mix for all your small engines (my chainsaw/linetrimmer/leafblower never ran so good).
