Default Oil Weight

What weight Mobil 1 should I use in my 2003 A8L 4.2? It is mainly used by my wife and has low miles. I purchased it in November 2002 and we just passed 9K miles.
TIA for your assistance.

Default 0w-30 or 5w-30 are both excellent choices :-)

You can't go wrong with either, and with oil changes at 10k mile intervals, expect motor wear issue to be nonexistent for the life of the car.

Default Also using M1 0w-40 on track (and year 'round), but ...

thinking about changing to ... <A HREF="http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_1_Racing_0W-30.asp">Mobil 1 Racing 0w-30</a>.

This is the "standard" Mobil 1 0w-30 with additional anti-wear and anti-oxidant additives to provide protection at higher rpm and temperature. Compared to 0w-40, the lower viscosity means more HP to the wheels :-) The trick is going to be finding someone selling it.

Default Re: Oil Weight

What about a M1 15-50 for those of us in the 100' Texas heat. Should you accept a little more friction with the higher viscosity oil to withstand this kind or daily heat?

Default Wouldn't be a problem

Look at your owner's manual.....for that temp I think it's more than acceptable.

I switched to the zero stuff after learning that Randy Young uses it all the time....in the cold Chicago winters my car starts so easily, plus it's lower friction which stands for more HP!!!

Default M1 0w-40 would be worth 4% more HP than M1 15w-50 ...

according to the table about 3/4's down in the link. M1 15w-50 would be OK, but even in Texas heat, I don't think you need it on a car with less than 200k miles on the clock.<ul><li><a href="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/17157/grattan_t3exit.jpg">Oil versus Oil</a></li></ul>
