One fuel cleaner: BG 44K...

I've put this in all of my vehicles, and have had immediate/noticable results in all of them. BG 44K cleans all of the mineral/carbon deposits that builds up in the fuel system after thousands of miles driving on unleaded, or with poor fuel. On my Explorer with 93K on it, this stuff worked so well that when it broke up the deposits it clogged the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) computer. The check engine light came on and I went to AutoZone which has free vehicle diagnostics and that was the problem...he reset but the light came back on 5 miles later. I ignored it and it has since shut off after driving on one tank. I recommend this product for all vehicles with over 15,000 miles. It brings back the original luster of a vehicle. You can get it for roughly $22 shipped - a large comparison to the $2 additives you can get at any gas station but well worth it.

Cheapest source found

It is best to run a tank of gas with Techron or BG44K right before an oil change, so any loosened carbon deposts that end up in the oil are removed right away.
I just did some research on this general topic that I thought I might share.
There are several good threads on the subject of fuel system treatments in Stoney's A6 FAQ.
In particular, I found this post, which discusses pro mechanic equipment for fuel injector cleaning, very interesting. I went and Googled up a NAPA page about the equipment, printed it out, and carried it to the large NAPA warehouse that's about my closest NAPA. I figured that if the kit were $200, or maybe $300, I would "pay" for it in a couple of cleanings.
Price at NAPA for the "Ultra Cleen" kit: $687 (!!!)

I bought a big bottle of Techron and marched onwards.

BG 44 has been around a while, just been a "secret" in the auto industry. I've seen it work wonders on poorly maintained, carboned up engines, but if you run good fuel (not Joe-Bob's Corner Gas-N-Git) in your car and run it at highway speeds/drive somewhat spiritedly regularly you shouldn't need it. Using a dose Techron every 3-4 tanks of gas is a good idea if you drive in town a lot, preventative maintenance to keep the fuel injection system clean. My street beater with over 600K on it is living proof.

It's an 84 VW Scirocco, bought it with about 150K on it about 10 years ago. I just keep up with the maintenances, drive it hard. The first motor blew with about 600K on it, dropped another motor in it, this one has just over 150K. Ol' Faithful is beat up, faded, and the exterior body rusting, but has only left me on the side of the road twice. I need to hit the lottery, restore the poor thing!
