my car freaks out if I try to run it on a lift- all the power bounces between wheels....

and I don't have ESP.

Well, after an 8 hour drive to Waterloo, IA, it went away. Actually it went completely away after putting it up on a lift and wiggling every joint including the center driveshaft. We'll see, but time can be the cheapest fix. 8 hours on the road, 65mph ave. and 27.5 mpg-- mostly 2-lane roads with 4-lane mixed in. Sunny day, and love the car again. Maybe I'll keep her, and skip the 2007 Avalon XL Touring Edition after all. Guy at work wants to buy the '97A8 for $9K. Tough call still.
