Paul, recently you posted a list of modifications to your ride. One caught my attention....on-demand tiptronic...

It's the electronics in the steering wheel that make it work. If your A8 or S8 didn't have the function, you would need a new steering wheel and airbag from a car that has that function.

Why the airbag?
Isn´t it just the controller for the MFSW that needs to be upgraded/changed?

It has the same one as a D3....but I don't think they came with dual stage air bags...so not guaranteed to work and probably will have a airbag light on.
This is what the new Audi self cancelling rings look like:
